A mural spending homage to Oscar Grant III, a 22-calendar year-old black man who was killed by a white Bay Location Immediate Transit (BART) law enforcement officer in 2009, was a short while ago unveiled in Oakland, California.

Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson, attended the unveiling of the mural on Saturday at the Fruitvale BART station where he was shot, the San Francisco Chronicle claimed. She reported the artwork meant to her that “Oscar did not die in vain.”

“He died so that we could arrive together in this location and for good arrive to this position,” she ongoing. “I believe that there will be a sense of peace in this spot, there will be a sense of therapeutic in this area, and there will be a sense of love in this place.”

The mural was developed by community California artist Senay “Refa One” Alkebulan, CBS San Francisco noted.

In addition to the artistic memorial, a previously unnamed section of roadway near the station has been named Oscar Grant III Way. The BART board of directors voted unanimously in February to title the street after Grant, NBC Bay Region reported. 

Previous BART police officer Johannes Mehserle fatally shot an unarmed Grant in the again at near variety when the young father was lying facedown on the platform at the Fruitvale station in the early early morning of Jan. 1, 2009.

The incident, captured on cellphone cameras, sparked huge protests more than police violence in opposition to black communities.

Grant’s existence was notably portrayed in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed 2013 film “Fruitvale Station,” starring Michael B. Jordan as Grant.

Mehserle was sentenced to two decades in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the dying of Grant, but was released immediately after 11 months, The Los Angeles Occasions described.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who signifies Oakland, identified the devotion to Grant in a Twitter publish Saturday.

“Today, 10 a long time following his dying, a mural of Oscar Grant was unveiled at Fruitvale Bart Station,” she wrote. “As we rejoice Oscar’s everyday living and legacy, allow us also recommit to reforming our legal justice system and combating for a planet where by black life definitely make a difference.”
