Sierra Van Der Meer of Whitehorse says she was just telling a person very last 7 days that she hardly ever sees bears.

“I often kind of joke that they are hiding from me,” she stated.

Turns out she spoke way too quickly — inside of days, the avid mountain biker had not only spotted several bears though out riding, but located herself in a hair-raising “once-in-a-lifetime dash” away from a grizzly as it gave chase.

It happened Sunday afternoon on the South Klondike Highway, involving Whitehorse and Carcross. Van Der Meer says she was riding alongside the roadside when she abruptly spotted a grizzly bear on the shoulder, just a number of metres away.

She was climbing uphill at the time, and decided to flip herself close to just in circumstance she needed to make a speedy getaway.

Excellent connect with.

“To my shock, it determined to cease munching its grass and type of wander up onto the freeway,” she recalled.

She considered the bear was perhaps cautious of her and would simply walk throughout the road and away.

“Rather, it made a decision to type of chase me down the hill.”

Van Der Meer says the freeway had been active with traffic that day, but there was a lull when she stumbled onto the bear. The chase continued for about five to 10 panicked seconds, she figures, just before a minivan came all-around the corner and spotted the action.

“[The driver] sort of sped up behind me, and the bear went then into the ditch yet again. And right after it kind of had gone into the ditch, [the driver] pulled onto the shoulder and adopted me a further it’s possible 200 or 300 metres, at which stage I ultimately felt harmless,” Van Der Meer claims.

‘Super-grateful’ for driver’s aid

She isn’t going to know the driver’s name, but explained it was a girl from Alaska.

“She naturally knew what she was carrying out, and did precisely what I required in that time,” Van Der Meer says.

“I’m super-grateful that she was there, simply because I don’t know if it would have held chasing me if she hadn’t been there. But she unquestionably de-escalated the scenario really promptly.”

After the girl carried on her way, Van Der Meer kept riding as her partner was envisioned shortly to pick her up on his way to Whitehorse.

Searching again, she isn’t going to believe she was in any major threat of an attack. She suspects the bear just needed her “out of his space.”

Continue to, it was a scare, she claims.

“So I’m going to stop bragging that I really don’t see bears, because I consider maybe I did this to myself.”
